Scotland's honourable Euro 2020 campaign met its end in Glasgow on Tuesday evening, following defeat to Croatia, who cemented their place as Group D's second-placed team with a 3-1 victory.

Callum McGregor scored a beauty on the night to give Scottish hopes a brief boost, with both Stuart Armstrong and Ché Adams involved from the outset, but Croatia's superiority in front of goal told in the second period.

Scotland's efforts on the night will fill all inside Hampden Park, and those watching at home, with hope that another appearance at a major tournament finals won't evade Steve Clarke's side for as long as their previous baron run.

With both sides in the knowledge that a win would grant passage to the competition's last 16, it was Croatia who drew first blood, as Nikola Vlacic edged the World Cup finalists ahead in the 17th minute.

A thunderous drive from McGregor gave Scottish hopes life before the break, but captain Luka Modric and subsequently Ivan Perisic secured Croatia's first-ever win over the Scots - with Modric's first-time strike a clear indication of the quality the Croats possess in the final third.

The margin of victory was also enough to earn them second place in Group D, ahead of the Czech Republic and behind group winners England.
