Ward-Prowse bags debut England goal

James Ward-Prowse was left ‘wanting more’ after scoring his debut goal for England in their first World Cup Qualifier against San Marino.

England came out 5-0 victors at Wembley, getting their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign off to a perfect start.

James Ward-Prowse played the full ninety minutes for England and opened the scoring in the 14th minute.

“It was a huge night,” Ward-Prowse confirmed to BBC Sport. “I think it’s one that you dream of as a boy growing up.

“You want to play for England, you want to score here at Wembley and to fulfil that is a massive honour and a great achievement. It’s left me leaving the pitch wanting more and wanting to chase more success like that.

“I did a little bit of work in the week, I wanted to try and get in the box, try and be a goal scoring threat and that’s something I knew was a responsibility of mine tonight. So to do that and get a goal, I’ve come away from the pitch feeling very happy,

“It was a very professional [performance]. I think these games can be very difficult, you have to approach it with the right mentality.

“They make it difficult; they defend for their lives and we have to keep moving the ball quick and do everything right. I think from the first 10 minutes to the last, we did everything right.”

Ward-Prowse came painstakingly close to getting a second goal as he lined up a trademark Prowsey free-kick.

“It was a great save from the keeper, fair play to him. I knew it was a little bit further out, I had to give it a little bit more and fair play to him, it was a great save and denied me a free kick goal as well.”

England now face Albania, who also claimed all three points in their opening match, on Sunday.
