Ralph Hasenhüttl has described the upcoming return of supporters to the team's home matches as a first step back towards normality for the club and its fans.

St Mary's is set to welcome up to 2,000 people for the game against Sheffield United on Sunday 13th December, following the government announcement this week that limited crowds can once again attend sporting events in certain areas of the country.

It will mark the first time since March 7th, when Southampton hosted Newcastle in a Premier League match, that Hasenhüttl's side will have played in front of their own supporters and, while it is only a limited number to begin with, it is something that the manager is happy to see.

"In the beginning, I was very surprised that it happened so quickly after the lockdown, but I am happy that they are coming back," he said.

"Even if it is only 2,000 it is a first step back to normality and I think the people will need this because I can't imagine the last game with fans. It feels like years ago.

"So it's good that they're coming back and hopefully it's getting quicker more and we are coming back to what we love the most and this is celebrating together after wins."
