Southampton’s Stuart Armstrong will have the chance to face England at Euro 2020 after Scotland qualified for their first major tournament in 22 years.

The Scots triumphed 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Serbia in the winner-takes-all qualification play-off final.

Ryan Christie fired the Tartan Army into the lead in Belgrade, but Real Madrid striker Luka Jović headed home a 90th-minute corner to take the game into extra time.

Goalkeeper David Marshall then thwarted Aleksandar Mitrović’s spot-kick after Scotland scored all five of their penalties.

It means Scotland will come up against England, Croatia and Czech Republic in Group D of next summer’s final tournament – their first since the 1998 World Cup.

Saints midfielder Armstrong was among the substitutes for Steve Clarke’s side, but was not called upon in 120 minutes of play.

Elsewhere, Ibrahima Diallo helped France secure their place at the 2021 Under-21 European Championship.

The young midfielder was introduced in the 64th minute of the 5-0 win over Liechtenstein, which ensures France will at least finish as one of the best second-placed teams.

Currently leading France’s qualifying group going into the last round of matches is Switzerland, for whom Alexandre Jankewitz featured as a second-half substitute, helping his team extend their 100 per cent record with a 2-1 victory over Azerbaijan.

Diallo and Jankewitz could go head to head when the nations meet on Monday, with top spot still up for grabs.
