Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl felt his side were good value for their 3-3 draw at Chelsea, after twice coming from behind.
Saints trailed 2-0 early on after a Timo Werner brace, before Danny Ings reduced the arrears just before half-time.
Strike partner Ché Adams opened his account for the season just after the break, only for Kai Havertz to restore the hosts’ advantage.
However, enjoying the better of the play in the second half, Jannik Vestergaard headed home in stoppage time to leave the boss suitably pleased.
“It was very intense and for our side it was a tough game in the first half against a strong side.
“We made a few silly mistakes and were not active and aggressive like we usually are, but it’s always difficult when players are coming back and haven’t had time to prepare.
“It’s not surprising some players have to take a bit of time to get adapted.
“The second half was much better. We played quite well and a had a few very good chances and deserved a point in the end.
“It was important after the last two wins that we had a positive result and a point here is always good, especially when you’re two down and then again down.
“It’s a good step forward and now we have Everton and Aston Villa, also tough games where we must play good and well.
"But today, every point is a good point to take."
