Southampton stopper Alex McCarthy is relishing the chance to return to action in three day's time, as Saints welcome Spurs to St Mary's, in a bid to overturn the disappointment felt after recent back-to-back defeats.

McCarthy, who featured in both of Saints' two opening ties, is approaching this weekend with calm, knowing that performances are yet to reach the heights witnessed post-lockdown, but that improvements will come as match fitness returns.

The 30-year-old also explained that, thanks to the fantastic form shown after the restart, camp is brimming with confidence, and belief has been far from dented following a below-par start.

"Obviously it's a great feeling to be back out there playing games again," McCarthy reflected. "It's been a roller-coaster year with everything that's happened.

"We've had a short pre-season and now the games are coming thick and fast. Obviously it's not the way we wanted to start the season, but we're only two games in so there's no reason to panic.

"We've got the characters and belief in the dressing room to turn that around very quickly. We've got a big opportunity on Sunday against Spurs to show that. The end to last season gave us to the perfect platform to get the ball rolling, in terms of results.

"As a group, we know what's required and what we need to do, starting Sunday.

"The club has changed a lot from when I first joined. We're playing higher now, and pressing from the front, which means I need to play higher up the pitch. I only see that as a positive.

"As everyone can see from the way we were playing after the restart, it's had a positive impact on us as a team."
