Hasenhüttl buoyed by improving Saints

Ralph Hasenhüttl says he is encouraged by the progress his Southampton team have been making in recent weeks.

Saints picked up their seventh point in a week in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at St Mary’s, following back-to-back away victories at Aston Villa and Chelsea over Christmas.

It means Hasenhüttl’s men have picked up 13 points from their last seven matches – more than half of their tally for the season – propelling them four points clear of the Premier League drop zone.

“When you see our situation one month ago, it was completely different,” the boss said. “In the moment, we have a much better situation.

“There’s still a long way to go, but the most important thing is that the team is now fighting together, we have better automatism, we are more convinced about what we are doing, which gives us more points.”

Hasenhüttl also praised the influence of substitute Moussa Djenepo against Palace, with the winger terrorising the right side of the Eagles’ defence on his return from injury, having missed the Villa and Chelsea wins.

“He always has a good impact in the game when he gets on the ball and goes on his dribbles, so this is good for him,” he added.
