Loan Watch: Jones victorious with Gillingham

Two of Southampton’s players out on loan came head-to-head on Saturday as Alfie Jones’s Gillingham saw off Jake Hesketh’s Lincoln City.

One of only five League One fixtures over the weekend, the Gills made home advantage count as Mikael Mandron netted midway through the first-half.

Jones, who’s featured in all but one of Gillingham’s league outings this season, played the full 90 minutes as Steve Evans’s side moved up to 14th.

Fellow Saints loanee Tom O’Connor was unavailable for the hosts, with the full-back currently on international duty with the Republic of Ireland Under-21s.

For Hesketh, the attacking midfielder was awarded a starting spot after impressing from the bench in last Tuesday’s 3-0 Leasing.com Trophy win over Rotherham.

On a difficult afternoon for the Imps, Hesketh was replaced by striker John Akinde at the break in what proved to be Lincoln’s fifth defeat in their last eight league outings.

Further down the pyramid in the Southern Division One South, Alex Cull was between the sticks for AFC Totton’s home defeat at the hands of Cinderford.

The Under-23s stopper conceded a controversial penalty on the hour-mark, as the Stags slumped to a 4-3 defeat despite a spirited late comeback.
