Ward-Prowse: Our mentality has changed

James Ward-Prowse believes Ralph Hasenhüttl has changed the way Southampton think about facing the Premier League’s top six.

After ending Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run a fortnight ago, Saints found themselves on level terms with reigning champions Manchester City at St Mary’s until two goals very late in the first half turned the game in the visitors’ favour.

Next up is a trip to Chelsea on Wednesday night – something the midfielder insists does not faze the current squad.

“He’s come in and set out his philosophy straightaway,” Ward-Prowse said of Hasenhüttl.

“I think he’s changed our mentality of playing against these big teams and trying to get results from it.

“We weren’t scared and we weren’t holding back; we were full throttle and we showed what we could do.

“That’s what this club’s about – competing with the top teams in the top ten of the Premier League.”

Ward-Prowse made his first start under the new boss in Sunday’s clash with City, and was pleased to be given the chance to impress.

“It’s nice,” he said. “It’s been a frustrating time, obviously, but you just have to make the most of the chances when you get them.

“I just wanted to go out, give it my all and put my heart on the line – like I always try to do – and do my best.

“Hopefully I’ve given the manager some thought and showed him what I can do. I’ll see where it takes me from here.”
