Oriol Romeu cut a proud figure as he led out Southampton in the Premier League for the first time as captain last night.

The Spanish midfielder, who joined Saints back in 2015, joined the exclusive club against West Ham at St Mary’s on his 134th appearance.

Though the occasion was soured by the result, a 2-1 defeat, Romeu described the personal milestone as one of the highlights of his Saints career.

“It’s been very nice to have that honour to captain the team for a game in the Premier League,” he said.

“It’s probably one of my nicest moments since I came to this club – something I didn’t expect when I arrived.

“Things have gone so well and I’ve always been really pleased to be here. I’m very happy with everyone around the club.

“It’s great to be leading the team and hopefully I can help – by being a captain or just being a player, helping everyone and getting better day by day.”
