Southampton Under-23s continued their positive pre-season period with friendly tournament success in Newcastle over the weekend.

Radhi Jaïdi's youngsters were 3-0 victors over hosts South Shields FC, before beating Marseille 2-0 in the final to claim the South Shields Challenge Cup.

Jake Hesketh netted twice, with Marcus Barnes completing the scoring in their first outing, while Callum Slattery and Michael Obafemi claimed a goal apiece against Marseille.

With more valuable match minutes under their belts, the Under-23s now face their final two pre-season tests against Brentford and QPR over the coming week, before their Premier League 2 campaign begins in earnest against Middlesbrough on August 10th (7pm BST) at Staplewood Campus.

Under-23s coach Radhi Jaïdi said: "It was important for the boys to get some more game time, as we edge nearer to the season starting.

"The understanding of what is required is there and the boys applied themselves well.

"We played against a physical side in South Shields and then had more of a technical game against Marseille. Both were good tests.

"We've got two games over the next week to finish the pre-season period, and I'm confident we'll be more than ready for our first PL2 game on August 10th."
