As 2017 draws to a close, we look back on our top retweets of the year...

5) Boufal and Academy tekkers: 2,775 RT, 8,564 Likes

This Saints family affair just sneaks into our top five ahead of Manolo Gabbiadini’s officials-defying brace in the EFL Cup final.

You learn to always keep the cameras rolling when Sofiane Boufal is around at Staplewood and the Moroccan’s keepie-up challenge with the Academy proved exactly why.

The sublime control on both sides of the hedge, the nervy moments in the middle and the team celebrations at the end... it’s no wonder this clip was an instant viral success.

4) Saint Mario: 2,980 RT, 6,051 Likes

There’s nothing like a good unveiling to set the pulses racing and the notifications into overdrive.

Saints broke their transfer record to secure the signing of Mario Lemina in the summer and suitably breached the top five tweets of the year with the announcement.

The former Juventus midfielder has since gone on to become an early fan favourite – already with a terrace classic to his name - following a series of eye-catching performances. A mix of the Gabon international’s best moments to the tune of “Man’s Not Hot” wasn’t far off making our top 10.

3)    Saints sportsmanship: 3,087 RT, 8,004 Likes

It could not be a top tweet countdown without the EFL Cup final but regrettably, our entry at three was the full-time tweet that no-one in red and white wanted to see.

While many considered Saints worthy winners at Wembley, it was Manchester United who lifted the trophy and our recognition of the Red Devils’ success was well received from all corners.

The congratulatory message to United garnered 3,087 retweets, 8,004 likes and hundreds of comments of support and words of fair-play.

2) Saints are red, Pompey are blue: 8,335 RT, 11,293 Likes

Who would have imagined that a poem would be one of Saints’ most popular tweets of 2017?

Just under 10 months later, the image of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg cupping his ear is still appearing in Saints fans’ timelines and with good reason. In second, coming in at 8,335 RT and 11,293 likes, “#SaintsFC are Red, Pompey are Blue…”

1) Taylor Announced: 30,012 RT, 55,380 Likes

Seen by over 2,000,000 eyes, the unveiling of Stuart Taylor’s new contract was Saints’ media event of 2017 and by some distance. From the nonsensical plot, the jaw-dropping drama and the show-stopping finale, it caused something of a stir on the internet.

The tweet – which even spawned a sequel from AS Roma – was retweeted more than 30,000 times, making it not only a very well-deserving winner here but also one of the most shared football tweets of the year. #TaylorAnnounced.
