Mauricio Pellegrino is confident Saints’ fighting spirit will serve them well in the Premier League clash at Brighton tomorrow.

The manager was delighted with the perseverance his side showed in finally breaking down a resolute West Brom defence at St Mary’s last time out.

Pellegrino believes this spirit will be key if Saints are to return home with a positive result from their first trip to the Amex Stadium in six seasons, where they will be backed by over 3,000 travelling fans.

“We have been working really well,” he said.

“We are scoring goals at the end of games, and we have to keep pushing for 90 minutes without losing control, even in the difficult moments.

“We have to know that we are really strong when we continue working with this spirit.”

Pellegrino admits he has been surprised by how well the three promoted teams have adapted to life in the Premier League.

Even sitting in a respectable 12th place at the start of the weekend, Brighton still find themselves below Newcastle (7th) and Huddersfield (11th), who they faced in the Championship last season.

“Brighton are a team with a good understanding, having been working together with the same manager and the same ideas for a long period of time,” he added.

“They are really clinical in some moments and we need to be well prepared if we want to bring something positive from this game.

SOUTHAMPTON MANAGER

“I am really surprised about Brighton, Huddersfield and Newcastle. For all three teams, coming up from the Championship is not easy.

“To play in this way in the first nine games, being really well prepared mentally in football terms to get points and win games, is what makes the competition really tough.”
