Ryan Bertrand reflected on an encouraging week away with England, as he helped them take a step closer to next year's World Cup finals.

The Saints left-back started both the 1-0 friendly defeat away to Germany and the 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Lithuania, at Wembley.

"Despite the result earlier, there were a few positives we managed to draw from the previous fixture," he told southamptonfc.com after Sunday night's fixture. "It was important that we went out today, got the win and showed that progression.

"It's a difficult game when they come and they sit off and try to frustrate you, but more often than not we managed to keep a good tempo and managed to get the goals."

England prevailed against Lithuania thanks to strikes from Jermain Defoe and Jamie Vardy in either half, keeping them top of Group F, with 13 points from five games, as they moved into a commanding position at the halfway stage of qualifying.

"We've got our individual team targets we want to hit, and we're just going to concentrate on each game as it comes and keep ticking off the boxes," said Bertrand, who was also pleased to produce two strong individual displays.

"On a personal note it's good to play for your country and get the starts in. You just hope you can do well enough to leave a good enough performance in the manager's mind for the coming fixtures too."
