Saints to host Sports Science Undergraduate Summit

Southampton Football Club is pleased to be hosting its inaugural Sports Science Undergraduate Summit, which will give students the opportunity to gain an insight into the professional football industry.

The event, which will take place on Wednesday 24th May, represents a fantastic chance for current university undergraduates to get a first-hand look at the daily execution of sports science and strength & conditioning practice in an applied setting.

The summit will provide the chance to listen to every member of Southampton’s sports science department, including Head of Sports Science Alek Gross.

The delivered content throughout the day will include athlete monitoring, growth and maturation, return to play, and much more, hosted by Academy Data Scientist Jonathan Woodhouse.

“The sports science department are really excited to be hosting this event,” Woodhouse explained.

“Not only will students see how applied sports science varies from an academy setting to first-team level, but understand how the multiple disciplines are incorporated into daily practice.

“The main objective of our summit is to provide university undergraduates with a basic understanding of applied sports science and strength & conditioning practice at Southampton.

“We feel this event is unique, due to the fact we have previous interns presenting that have worked here at the club in the past and have progressed into full-time jobs after graduating.

“In addition to giving undergraduates the fundamental knowledge of what it is really like in an elite sporting environment, we hope to prepare students if they apply for placements or seek full-time employment within football clubs.”

The event will be held on Wednesday 24th May between 9am and 5pm at the club’s Staplewood Campus training ground.
