Cédric: The better team lost

After a valiant effort at Wembley, Cédric felt it was incredibly cruel on Southampton that they did not take home the EFL Cup.

Saints were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United in a pulsating final, in which they came from 2-0 down to nearly complete a historic comeback.

Despite their efforts, though, Zlatan Ibrahimović's late header broke Southampton hearts and meant that, for all their wonderful work, a rare opportunity to lift major silverware slipped through the club's fingers.

Cédric had no doubt, however, that the better side did not win.

"Definitely. I think everybody saw this," he said. "Not just me, but Manchester for sure felt we were stronger than them. I think we created more chances, but in football you need to score.

"It's always tough to speak after a loss like this, because it meant a lot to us.

"We were trying a lot, I think we had a good game, a good run – all my teammates deserved to win.

"Not winning was a disappointment, of course, but we tried everything and this is the positive thing about this."

Speaking about his teammates, Cédric said: "They were great. They were great since the first game. Everybody was involved in the competition, which is another positive point.

"Also, I think it was a big commitment from everyone. We deserved to win, and I'm very proud of my colleagues what they showed, and, once again, I say that we deserved this title."
