van Dijk sums up disappointment

Virgil van Dijk did not hide the depth of his disappointment after Southampton's exit from the UEFA Europa League.

The 1-1 draw at home to Hapoel Be'er Sheva meant that Saints were dumped out of the competition, with their opponents instead edging them out for a place in the knockout rounds.

Van Dijk, who netted a late equaliser at St Mary's, said: "We're so disappointed, especially the way we conceded the goal. We can't let that happen, especially at this level. We are obviously very frustrated and it's difficult to put into words at the moment.

"It's close to our box and we try to play out, and we know they press. They go and they press a lot, and we give it away too easy and obviously we're wide open and it's only one ball through and they score. We can't let that happen and we need to look at that and improve a lot.

"We wanted to win, obviously, because if you play for a 0-0 you are going the wrong way, but we had the opportunities in the first half. We weren't clinical enough, so I'm just very disappointed at the moment.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game. We played them away and we had a tough game there. We were prepared and we were ready for it, but it's about scoring that goal. Obviously, we couldn't keep the clean sheet. We need to look at it and bounce back on Sunday, which is going to be a massive game."
