Pharoah makes Saints history

Southampton's Sophia Pharoah made Regional Talent Club history last month, by becoming the first player to be called up to a competitive England squad.

The Saints Under-16s player travelled with the Under-17 national side for a ten-day training camp in Lithuania to compete in Phase One of the European Championship qualifiers.

England finished top of their group to qualify for the next round, and Pharoah came off the bench in a 14-0 win over Lithuania to make her international bow as a Saints player.

“I enjoyed every moment of it,” she explained.

“Even though I didn’t get much playing time, it was a great experience to get away with England and represent your country.

“A lot of the girls at the camp are playing ladies football so they were quite physical – that was a test, but I really enjoyed it.

“Since I’ve been back a lot of the girls here have been asking how it was and it’s good to give feedback so that if they get invited they will know what the environment is like.”

Pharoah joined Southampton’s Regional Talent Club last year, after Saints were awarded a Tier 1 license from The FA.

Since then she has been an integral member of the Under-16s set-up and continues to act as a role model for others in the newly established Women’s and Girls sides.

“It’s amazing,” continued Head of Women’s & Girls’ Football, Martina Heath.

“It’s really fortunate for our younger girls that they can now look up and see someone so close to home, that has come from the club, go on and make it into England.

“There’s a real buzz around at the moment. Sophia’s the first ever player to be called up to a competitive England squad, so she really has made history for us.”
