Claude Puel feels good transition when his Saints side lose the ball is helping the side to keep teams at bay.
Despite the hosts Hapoel Be’er Sheva creating a number of opportunities, Southampton stood firm to record another clean sheet.
It is something that has become a hallmark of the team in recent weeks, something which has, naturally, pleased the boss.
Puel told southamptonfc.com: “We have a good defence because of all the players. We have a good transition when we lose possession.
“It’s important because we didn’t have many possibilities to score but you can see that we stayed strong to get the result.”
As Saints looked to establish a foothold in the game in the first-half, Puel took action by introducing Dušan Tadic to the action in place of young Jake Hesketh on 36 minutes.
He explained his thinking behind that change on what he described as a difficult night.
“We tried to keep more possession and play with more calm with Dušan coming on.
“It was a difficult game for Jake so I prefer to protect him as he is a good player for the future.
“It was a big experience for him and all my players with all the fans of Hapoel in the stadium.”
