James Ward-Prowse believes his England Under-21 teammate Nathan Redmond will be an exciting addition to the Southampton squad.

Redmond completed a move to Saints, from Norwich City, over the weekend, becoming the club’s first signing of the summer.

The winger is well-known to a number of Southampton players already, as a result of his England youth career. In fact, Redmond was part of the under-21 team that won the Toulon Tournament, in May, alongside Ward-Prowse, Matt Targett and Jack Stephens.

Ward-Prowse told Southampton’s official YouTube channel: "I'm very excited. I think the fans can look forward to seeing a real exciting player.

“When he gets on the ball, he wants to go one-v-one with the player, he wants to beat him and get crosses into the box. He's a good lad as well, he's got a good head on him and works very hard for the team.

"He's played in the Europa League competitions before, so I think he'll be able to bring his experience to the table and, more importantly, he's a great player with good quality on the ball, so I think the fans will be excited watching him, for sure.

"He's an important character in the dressing room at England Under-21 level and I'm sure he'll be able to bring some of that to the team this year and I think he'll fit in straight away. He's a good lad who mixes in with everyone, so it's very exciting times.”

Redmond’s first goal for Norwich came against Saints, in a Premier League match in 2013, and it is one Ward-Prowse hasn’t forgotten.

"I remember that goal, because he cut inside and beat me and shot,” he said. “The fans can look forward to seeing a real exciting player and, for a midfielder, he's a player that you want to look for straight away and give the ball to, to make things happen in the final third.”

On the Toulon Tournament victory alongside Redmond, England Under-21s captain Ward-Prowse added: "It was a great experience for all of us, and to share that with Nathan, Jack and Matt was great for all of us, and I think we can use all that energy and positivity to bring into the new season and really hit the ground running.”
