Mané hopes extra rest will help Saints against City

Sadio Mané hopes the additional rest Southampton have had this week will prove an advantage against Manchester City on Sunday.

Manuel Pellegrini's team will visit St Mary's in between the two legs of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, having drawn 0-0 in the initial fixture, at Etihad Stadium, on Tuesday night.

With Saints having had a clear week, Mané hopes they could get an edge, although he insists they cannot take anything for granted against a side of City's quality.

"I think the advantage is because we have more days' rest," the forward told "They played Tuesday, but we have to focus for the game and be ready, and give our best for the fans and for the club."

With Saints eighth in the table, ahead of their final three matches, Mané underlined the importance of trying to take three points this Sunday, as Ronald Koeman's men chase a spot in Europe.

"It's a big game. I think now we are ready, because we are training good and everybody is focused on Sunday," said Mané, who also explained there is a positive mood among the squad, following last week's 4-2 victory at Aston Villa.

"It was important for us to win that game, and we did. I think the confidence is back now. We're focused for the next one at home and hopefully we're going to win."

Mané came off the bench to net Saints' fourth at Villa Park – marking his fourth goal in his last five games – and he is pleased with his current scoring form.

"At the moment I'm scoring and I am happy for that, because I'm scoring for the team," he said. "Also, it's important for players, especially a striker, to score for your team and for the confidence also and I am happy for that."
