U18s' clean sheet delights coach Fleming

Under-18s manager Craig Fleming was thrilled to see his side pick up a first clean sheet of the season in their 3-0 win against Aston Villa.

Goals from Connor Langan, Harley Willard and Tyreke Johnson handed Fleming’s men all three points to extend their unbeaten run to four games.

Fleming was slightly frustrated with his side’s display, despite the win, but the clean sheet was something that pleased the former Norwich City defender immensely. “I’m absolutely delighted as an ex-defender about the clean sheet. They have worked very hard for it," he told youtube.com/southamptonfc.

“The clean sheet is massive, but you have to take your results glasses off and the first half we were poor.

“I said at half time I’m glad we’re winning 1-0 for many reasons, but the first was so I could have a go and them not think it was results driven.

“It was a difficult game to play in, Aston Villa play a direct style. In the second half they picked it up and ground out the result.

“Not every game is going to be free flowing. There are going to be games where you play against teams who go more aerial. You have to stand up to that and then play your football.”

The win extended Saints’ unbeaten run in the league to four games, and Fleming says it’s no coincidence that has come following good performances at both ends of the pitch.

“It’s about finding the balance, but it’s also the manner in which you get your results. They have to understand that and they are,” he added.

“It’s no coincidence when you’re doing both sides well you’re getting the good results and the performances individually.

“They are fantastic to work with. They listen and they want to do the right things. Now it’s about making the transition to the more professional environment.”
