TALKING POINTS: Koeman on Chelsea success

By SFC Media time Sun 04 Oct Club

Ronald Koeman spoke to the media after seeing his side record a memorable 3-1 victory away to Chelsea.

Find out what he had to say:

On the win…

I’m very proud of the players. I think a difficult start in the game, a little bit the same as last season, 1-0 down and difficulties in the beginning.

I think after the 1-1 it was an important moment to score that. I think the difference between the first half and the second half was how we came out of the dressing room – really aggressive to press and to play good football.

We were the better team, we had the better chances in the game and totally deserved the win.

On Chelsea being denied a penalty…

Maybe then it was 2-5 the final result. Even worse for them.

On where the win ranks...

It was a long time ago that we won an away game. Maybe this is one of the best places to get your first away win.

I think we have to keep working and we showed a great second half. It’s now an international break and we hope that everybody will come back in a good shape to try and win the next one and play good football.

That’s the key for us to win games, it’s the way we play and how we try to play. I think that’s important

On the importance of the win after a difficult start…

It’s true, a difficult start, but it’s the spirit of the team what is so strong, even in a difficult start of the season.

The changes what we had to make needs time. We get time of that, everybody is understanding that and every week we play better football.

We had a good win against Swansea – not the way how we can play football, but we showed that in the second half, how good Southampton can be.

On talking about his side rather than Chelsea…

I think you can talk about Chelsea but I like to talk about Southampton. All the credit to us. Of course, they are not in the best period in the season and if you don’t win there is always something about the confidence.

You saw the difference in the Chelsea team after the 1-1 and after the 2-1. It’s a little bit normal. All the credits to how we played in the second half.

On Ryan Bertrand…

He’s one of the best. He can be the best, but he’s still young, he’s still to improve. He was three months out and he didn’t have a good pre-season.

He’s defending well, offensively strong, has a good cross and good passing. I like that kind of full-back.
