Koeman happy with Tadić and Pellè progression

Ronald Koeman believes Graziano Pellè and Dušan Tadić can play an important role for Southampton this season having now been in England for over a year.

Pellè and Tadić, who both joined in the summer of 2014, enjoyed successful first campaigns with Saints, but Koeman feels as though the duo will have even more of an influence this season.

Striker Pellè has found the back of the net on four occasions so far in the Premier League this season, while Tadić netted twice in the win against Norwich City.

And Koeman believes Serbian Tadić has a freshness that is helping him become a key player for Saints. “I had some discussions with Dušan in the last few weeks,” said Koeman.

“He was not happy about some decisions that I took, for example he was on the bench against Midtjylland in the away game, but I wasn’t really happy about the performance of Dušan.

“Part of the problem was that he was not really fresh and he was struggling with his groin problem. It was a good conversation because he likes to always play, he likes to train and he is a fantastic professional.

“We showed some clips to Dušan. He is now really fit and you see the difference in the training sessions. He is a key player that can normally give assists for players to score.

“He had a very good start last year, close to the winter he was struggling and he had difficulties at the end of the season. Now finally he is on his physical level.”

Pellè’s four goals in the Barclays Premier League so far, along with two in the UEFA Europa League, has seen him make his mark in the early stages of the campaign.

“I think he also learned off his first season in the Premier League,” Koeman added. “It looks that he is a little more consistent than he was last year.

“Already he has scored four in the Premier League and is an important player, not only about scoring but being the target man and to keep the ball, to have good movements from the other strikers.

“It is important to be in the right moment in the box to score or create and he is more consistent than he was last year,” Koeman continued.

“It is a new situation. He is playing for the national team, scoring for the national team, scoring for Southampton and that gives the player a lot of belief and confidence.

“In my opinion he is a key player that has to show to the rest of the players the ambition that they have.”
