Virgil van Dijk was thrilled to grab his first Barclays Premier League goal and help Southampton to three points against Swansea City.

Van Dijk opened the scoring for Ronald Koeman’s side in the 3-1 win against the Swans, before Dušan Tadić and Sadio Mané added to the defender’s goal in the second half.

The defender, who in the process picked up his first league win with the club, says it was a big moment for him personally and a big victory for the team.

“I’m very pleased,” he told youtube.com/southamptonfc. “It’s been a dream come true already by playing in the Premier League.

“But scoring my first goal feels amazing and to get the three points as well makes it even better.

“If you look at my height I should be dangerous every time. We practice it a lot. It was the perfect example I think of a great corner and finish. It’s been very good and I’m very happy with it.

“It’s a very important win. We played very well against MK Dons and we wanted to continue the run we have now. It’s good to get the win, especially at home against a team who is competing with us for a European place.”

Despite the win, van Dijk still believes there is more to come from the team as they look to build on their back-to-back wins.

“We won and that’s the most important thing. Overall we can always improve a lot of things, especially in the last 20 minutes when they came for us,” van Dijk added.

“We started the second half great but there’s always things to improve. It’s a good thing to keep improving and never be satisfied.

“We have an amazing team spirit and that’s the foundations of a great team. We have amazing quality and we need to show it.”
