Clinical showing pleases Koeman

Ronald Koeman was happy with his side’s clinical showing as they beat Swansea City 3-1 at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.

Koeman watched on as goals from Virgil van Dijk, Dušan Tadić and Sadio Mané put his side three ahead just after the hour mark, before Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled one back late on from the penalty spot for the visitors.

The Saints boss felt his side could have done more after taking a three-goal lead, but was delighted with the confidence they showed in front of goal.

“It’s not easy to win against Swansea because they don’t receive a lot of goals. So to score three times against them is a big compliment,” Koeman told

“In my opinion an excellent win is total domination, a lot of chances and winning. I think it’s a good win, but not an excellent one.

“The performance was not the level what we can bring. I think in the second half after the 2-0 and 3-0 later on we had too much defending and we were not controlling the game.

“They didn’t create a lot of chances and it was 3-1 finally. We had some mistakes in our ball possession, but maybe the best game if you talk about the chances what we create and the goals scored.

“I think that was the difference between Swansea and Southampton.”

Saints enjoyed a dominant spell at the start of the second half as Tadić and Mané found the net to extend the lead for the hosts, with Koeman happy with that spell of the game.

“That was good football, good movements and good goals. Then you hope you will control the game until the last second,” Koeman added.

“They had a lot of shots from outside the box and that was about not really good defending out of the positions on the midfield. We have to learn.

“We will show the players again on Tuesday when we are back in training, but the win was important.”
