TALKING POINTS: Koeman's pre-Sunderland press conference

By SFC Media time Thu 30 Apr Club

Ronald Koeman spoke to the media ahead of Southampton's game against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Barclays Premier League.

Here's what the Saints boss had to say:

On it being harder to play against struggling teams at this stage…

Sometimes I think it makes it more difficult because they are really fighting for one point and you have to prepare for that. But, on the other side, we call it in Holland on a small line you can break it and then that’s the mentality sometimes of the teams who are really fighting, struggling with results.

If you score the first goal, how will be the reaction of the fans, the team reaction? You saw it in the home game against Hull City, and it was over.

But in the start of the game it’s difficult, because they are really full in the spirit and ambition and the supporting of the fans and you have to pass that. Then you have possibilities.

On the fight Dick Advocaat has on his hands…

It’s difficult. He came in and Sunderland was already in a difficult situation. It’s not always I think, most of the time it’s not working.

Maybe now the case of Aston Villa with Tim Sherwood it’s really working, the team is playing different, more offensive, more attacking football and the case of Sunderland with Advocaat is in the shorter term. In that situation it’s so difficult.

I have a lot of sympathy for him. He was my coach and he’s a very successful coach. He did a great job in St Petersburg, with the club and the Russian national team. It’s a big name as a coach in Holland.

On Bournemouth’s achievements…

I think fantastic. They have had a fantastic season. It is a very difficult league to be first or second in the table. A great job from the coach and everybody and it’s nice to have a derby – a team close to Southampton.

It’s 30 minutes for an away game and I like that. It makes it a little bit special and that’s good. It’s good to have. That means for the rest of the clubs they have to travel to the south coast – that’s good.

On Jay Rodriguez…

He was already two days involved in the sessions. Fantastic, first for Jay to be part of it and to be involved and that’s good. It’s the next step and now we have the programme to make every day a step.

In one or two weeks we hope to have contact and to be like a normal player involved in all parts of the sessions and all the exercises. We are planning.

The Under-21s still have some games to play and maybe around two weeks he can be part of a match. It’s all about how he’s going next week and the second week.

On the return to form of Graziano Pellè…

You need a goalscorer. You need front players who are full of confidence. The second goal was a fantastic goal – it was a great cross from Shane and it was a fantastic header. That’s nice. It gives everybody good support and about the confidence.

On whether more Saints players should have been included in the PFA Team of the Year…

Maybe, but it’s not easy against all of the big stars in the Premier League. I think it is well deserved for Ryan Bertrand. He’s doing a fantastic season and that’s why we were interested in Ryan and we are happy that we have Ryan in the team.

It’s a left full-back, left foot, still young and with a lot of development.
