Koeman looking forward rather than back

Ronald Koeman says it’s important everyone looks forward, not back, as Southampton prepare for the final 11 games of the season.

Saints have endured a disappointing run in recent weeks, scoring just once in their last five games and suffering back-to-back defeats heading into Crystal Palace on Tuesday night at St Mary’s.

But Koeman says his side remain in a good position, and believes the fans have a crucial role to play.

“It’s the first of the last 11 games that we have until the end of the season,” Koeman told Southampton’s official YouTube channel. “I’m not interested in looking back why we don’t have good results.

“We look forward and we know that we are still in a good position. It’s all about ending the season in a good way.

“If not, it will be a good season. We have shown this season a lot of good games. The fans have been amazing in their support for the team.

“We didn’t win at home in the last three league games and we scored just one time in the last five. We need to improve ourselves but I believe in the players. I believe that we can finish in a high position in the table.”

Koeman says he is aiming for a minimum of five wins from their remaining games to ensure they reach their target of European football next season, starting with Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.

“We need to win five times out of the 11 games, then I think it’s a special season. We believe in the spirit and the qualities even after a difficult time,” he added.

“That’s what we play for until the end of the season, that’s to qualify for European football. Now after the title for Chelsea in the League Cup, that means fifth and sixth normally.

“We need to focus on that, to get that we need to win five games normally, in my opinion. That’s the focus we need. The support of the fans is amazing, the whole season. I’m sure they will support again what they have done until now.”

Koeman also confirmed that Toby Alderweireld should be back involved against Palace, with no fresh injury concerns following West Brom.

“We have one session, if Toby passes that he will be part of the team,” Koeman added. “But all the rest of the players are in good shape.”
