TALKING POINTS: Koeman's post-Liverpool press conference

Ronald Koeman spoke to the media following Southampton's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League at St Mary's on Sunday.

Here's what the Southampton manager had to say:

On being unfortunate…

A little bit, yes, because I think we started very well I think with good ball possession, really good movements in attack and maybe a little bit unlucky about the decisions of the referee in the first half.

They scored a great goal and then it’s always difficult again after that goal but until half-time we played very good football. We had the best chances in the game, the situation of [Eljero] Elia, hands or no hands, from the goalkeeper it’s difficult to see.

I can understand that decision of the referee but I don’t understand the second situation in the game because that’s a clear penalty and then it’s difficult.

Our opponent Liverpool were defending well with good organisation in the team. You know if you take more risk more space for them on the counter attack with Sterling and Sturridge.

I'm proud of how we played.

On his team’s lack of goals at home…

We know the last few games we are struggling a bit more scoring. If you play three times in a row at home and don’t score it’s impossible to win games.

That’s football. Maybe it’s a little bit about the confidence of the players. I’m disappointed about the result but not about the performance of the players.

On the penalty decisions…

The first situation is difficult because if you whistle it’s a penalty and a red card and you have to be sure as a referee to do that.

Maybe Filip Djuričić in that moment fell a little bit too easily in the box, but the second one there’s no question. Human people can make mistakes.

On refereeing…

I think in every country there's always critics to referees. I don’t do that. It’s a difficult job what they have to do. I think the fourth referee can do much more than he does in England in the Premier League. He’s watching the game like the people on the touchline.

On his players’ frustrations at half-time…

Of course they were angry about being 1-0 down in the game because we deserved much more in the first half. In football it’s all about scoring goals and Coutinho made a great goal.

We didn’t score with more chances what we had than Liverpool in the first half but that’s football.

On Sadio Mané…

He was late. We have rules, instructions with the players and you can’t be late when you have to play against Liverpool.

On how to start scoring at home again…

Keep working, use training sessions to keep movements, confidence to the players. Now we have more good players available. We didn’t have that in the last few weeks and we have more options. Maybe we can use that.
