U21 PREVIEW: Hunter expecting a technical test

Martin Hunter is expecting a technical battle when Southampton’s Under-21s take on Manchester United at the Staplewood Campus on Monday night, kick-off 7pm GMT.

United sit top of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League, but should Hunter’s side beat them for the first time, they will move level on points with their opponents.

Following the 1-0 Under-21 Premier League Cup win against Ipswich Town last Monday, Hunter is expecting a very different challenge this time around.

Speaking to Southampton’s official YouTube channel, he said: “It will be a different test, with a different sort of player. It will be more of a technical game.

“We’ve played them several times and we would like to beat them this time. Everyone is looking forward to the game. We’ve had a good recovery from the Ipswich game.

“It was a terrific performance, from a defensive view and the number of chances we created. That was a positive. In terms of game management and style of play I thought the players coped with it really well.

“It will be a different scenario on Monday night and they need to key into what we need to do in terms of preparation.”

Saints have two league games and the next round of the Under-21 Premier League Cup to play before Christmas, and Hunter is pleased to see the games coming thick and fast.

“We’ve got three games coming up before Christmas with United, Leicester and the cup game,” Hunter added. “That’ll be good, if we can get six points going into the new year we’ve got a good schedule of games.

“It’s virtually week-to-week from January through to May. We want to be in a position to compete and we’re doing that successfully at the moment.

“It will help tremendously. Preparing all week in training for a game and not playing is harder in terms of focus for longer periods but they’ve been good at that. Week-to-week games will be great and a real challenge.”
