José Fonte has revealed that Saints players wanted to maintain their momentum ahead of QPR on Saturday when asking Ronald Koeman if they could train on their day off this week.
Immediately after Southampton knocked Arsenal out of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening at the Emirates – the club’s fifth win in a row – the skipper presented the idea of the squad reporting for training the following day when no activity was scheduled, something the manager had never previously experienced.
With the focus firmly set on three points in their league clash with the Hoops at St Mary’s this weekend, Saints’ group were all in agreement that preparation would be boosted by working on Wednesday.
“Obviously, you are very happy at winning the game, and possibly you would think: ‘Okay, we need a rest’,” Fonte told the Daily Echo.
“But we decided as a team, and as a group, that it’s more important to accelerate the regeneration process, so when it comes to Saturday we give ourselves the best chance to win the game, which is going to be a massive game for us, so we can keep the momentum going.”
“I spoke with Morgan [Schneiderlin], with Kelvin [Davis], with the more senior players, and we decided together that it would be better to come in the next day, because we want to win Saturday. Then we spoke with the manager and the manager said: ‘Yes, okay, that’s good’.
“We know what’s best for us. We all want to win, and if you want to win you need to be professional and to be professional we couldn’t have the day off.”
