Ronald Koeman took his first training session as Saints’ manager today as the first team’s pre-season preparations got underway.
The new manager was joined on the training pitch by his coaching team of brother Erwin and Jan Kluitenberg plus new additions Sammy Lee and Dave Watson, who were appointed this morning.
The squad reported to the club’s new-look Staplewood training ground for 9am and were quickly handed their trainingwear for the coming season as they settled into their new surroundings.
Strikers Emmanuel Mayuka and Billy Sharp were back in the fold after spending much of last season out on loan, but Dani Osvaldo was absent as he recovers from illness.
Dejan Lovren, Maya Yoshida, Gastón Ramírez and Artur Boruc have been given extra time off after international commitments extended their seasons into June, while Morgan Schneiderlin is still at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals with France.
The players present were put through a number of drills, but will have been pleased that many of them involved the football as well as the traditional early-July running.
Over the coming days, the squad will be subjected to a series of physical tests at both Staplewood and Southampton Solent University, who have a partnership with the club.
