More World Cup heartache for Adam

By SFC Media time Fri 20 Jun Men's First team

Adam Lallana once again appeared from the bench as England suffered a second successive World Cup defeat to leave their hopes of reaching the last 16 hanging by a thread.

The Saints man came on as a substitute on 71 minutes, with the Three Lions a goal down to Uruguay and realistically needing at least a point if they were to progress to the knockout stage.

England quickly levelled matters through Wayne Rooney, only for Liverpool’s Luis Suárez to score his second of the game five minutes from time.

Roy Hodgson threw on Lallana’s old Saints teammate Rickie Lambert, but the Three Lions could not be prevented from slipping to their second group-stage defeat.

Luke Shaw was an unused substitute for Hodgson’s side, as was Gastón Ramírez for the victors.

Having now lost to Italy and Uruguay, England’s fate is out of their own hands and could well be sealed this evening.

Italy and Costa Rica, who both took three points from their opening matches, face off in Recife tonight at 5pm BST. Anything but an Italian win will see England mathematically eliminated.

If Italy do win tonight, England will need to beat Costa Rica next Tuesday and hope that the Azzurri defeat Uruguay. That would then leave England, Costa Rica and Uruguay all on three points, with goal difference deciding who finishes second and progresses.

The final Group D matches take place simultaneously at 5pm BST next Tuesday. England-Costa Rica will be staged at the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte, while Italy vs Uruguay is at Natal’s Estádio das Dunas.
