Hunter: Basic errors cost us

Martin Hunter was left feeling frustrated by ‘basic errors’ that led to Saints’ Development Squad losing 3-1 to Everton on Monday night.

The Blues fought back from a goal down to win comfortably at the Merseyrail Community Stadium in Saints’ penultimate game of the current campaign.

Hunter believes Everton were good value for their victory after displaying ample energy and a will to win.

“Everton deserved to win,” the coach admitted to saintsfc.co.uk. “We got exactly what we deserved. The game was dominated by Everton because they wanted to run, they wanted to press.

“They had more energy and more determination than we did. I just don’t think we were good enough all over the pitch. There are no excuses for us.”

Hunter pointed to a number of careless mistakes throughout the encounter that gifted the hosts the advantage, including a missed opportunity to re-establish a lead through a spot-kick.

He continued: “We got a penalty and we missed the penalty. Then, Matt Young made a mistake that led to their equaliser. In the second half, it was just a catalogue of errors.

“Jake [Sinclair] lost the ball, ran back and fouled the lad for their first penalty. There is no dispute that it was penalty.

“Omar Rowe gave away a free-kick and then there was a clear handball by Sam McQueen, so we were punished. You can’t afford to make basic errors like that.”
