Calum Chambers spoke to the press on Thursday afternoon ahead of Saints’ Barclays Premier League game at Fulham.
Here are the key points:
On Fulham…
"We go into it with confidence from our last performance. Hopefully we can come away with three points. We know Fulham have got some good players. It won’t be an easy game. We’ll have to go into it fully focused and we’ll give it 100 per cent and hopefully come home with a win."
On Mauricio Pochettino’s trust in him…
"It’s so good. The manager has been really, really good with all of us – all of the young players. He gave me my debut. I can’t thank him enough for that. The Club and the manager have got great belief in all the youngsters. It’s really good playing alongside players your age, that you’ve known since you were a young boy. It’s such a great feeling."
On the transition to playing at right-back…
"I spoke to some close people to me. Myself, I chose to go from centre-midfield to right-back because I felt I could further my career in that position. It has helped me with my touch and everything else. I’m just enjoying playing in that position at this moment in time.
"I’ve been used to shifting about a few times over the years. I’ve played right-wing, centre-back, centre-midfield. I enjoy a new challenge. Going from centre-midfield, I took the attributes that I learned there – awareness, first touch – and took them into right-back and I think that’s improved my game quite a lot.
"In possession, I felt comfortable. Positionally, it took me a few games to get to grips with it because it’s different. I’ve come along way since I first moved there."
On Sam Gallagher…
"I think you saw from his performance against Arsenal [how good he is]. He’s a really good player. He’s big and he’s got pace. He’s a good finisher. I was really pleased and impressed with his performance against Arsenal. [He was] unlucky that he didn’t score on his debut but I’m sure he’s proud of himself, as everyone at the Club is.
"He’s always been one of the players to watch. He’s been a good player since he’s been at Southampton. [You can expect] goals and him to get more game-time. He’s a good player and I think he just wants to show everyone what he can do. He is capable of playing at this level."
On his season so far…
"At the start of the season I just wanted to try and get myself in and around the First Team. I went away with them in pre-season and I was determined to show the gaffer what I could do. I wouldn’t have dreamed of what I’ve done now at the start of the season. I’m really pleased at how it’s all gone so far."
On idols…
"Any kid would love a career like Gary Neville’s. He’s had a fantastic career. I’ll try my best. When I was young, I used to play at right-wing. I used to look up to David Beckham and that group of players – Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. I looked up to them and watched them. I dreamed about playing in the Premier League and doing what they’ve done."
