Young Duo Commit To Pro Deals

Saints Academy pair Will Britt and Omar Rowe have each signed contract extensions on professional terms.

Goalkeeper Britt and winger Rowe – both 18 – are the latest players in a long line to commit their immediate futures to the Club, after making the breakthrough into the Saints Under-21 team last season.

Both men completed the second years of their scholarships last season, and they will now form part of the Development Squad for the campaign ahead.

They follow in the footsteps of Dominic Gape and Ryan Seager, who also penned new deals at the end of last season.

The pair were also part of the same scholarship intake as James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw, who are prime examples of what the duo are aiming now for.

“This is basically the first part done,” said speedy winger Rowe after signing. “I’ve wanted to get this stage for a long time. I’ve been aiming towards it, and I’m glad that’s it’s now come.

“I just want to learn every day and get the best out of what I can do and do the best that I can to achieve what I want because this is what I want.

“This is just the first step, but I want to be in the First Team when the time is right. All I’ve got to do is keep working so that the time will come.”

Goalkeepers tend to develop later on in their careers but, after getting some vital matches under his belt by helping Norwich to secure the FA Youth Cup last season, Britt feels he is well placed to push on at Southampton.

“My main priority is to become the best goalkeeper I can possibly be and to get a professional contract at the Club means I feel I’ve succeeded a part of that,” he said.

“We’ve got a strong age group and one of the strongest in the country I’d say. Most of the lads see James and Luke are playing for the First Team and England and we want to follow them.

“Ultimately, I would like to be pushing towards the First Team. I know that playing for them might be a bit far away, but I would love to be able to train with them and push others to become the best I can possibly be.”
