Gastón Seeks Progress

Gastón Ramírez will hope to seal Uruguay’s place in the semi-finals of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup this weekend.

Ramírez was an unused substitute in the South American side’s 2-1 win over Nigeria on Thursday night, but his nation can book their place alongside Spain from Group B in the last four of the competition with a win over Tahiti on Sunday.

It is not quite as cut and dried as that though, because if Nigeria beat Spain then goal difference will come into play, with Uruguay requiring a four goal swing in their favour should both they and the Super Eagles win.

This weekend will, however, definitely be the last Confederations Cup action for Maya Yoshida. Confirmation of Japan’s exit from Group A came on Wednesday after their thrilling 4-3 defeat to Italy, and the Samurai Blue will complete the formalities of the league stage when they take on Mexico on Saturday evening.

Yoshida and his teammates will be eager to get off the mark to avoid leaving Brazil point-less.

Elsewhere this weekend, James Ward-Prowse and the England Under-20s are due to play their opening fixture of the U20s World Cup against Iraq in Turkey on Sunday.
