Steven Davis insists that Saints will keep pushing to earn as many points as they can between now and the end of the season.
Southampton were worthy winners over the Blues at St Mary’s, but Davis confessed they had to ‘dig in’ to take a second successive league victory which propelled them up to 12th in the Barclays Premier League table.
Despite the success, only four points separate Saints from the drop zone, meaning there is still plenty of work to do.
“It was another massive performance from the boys today,” Davis told Saints Player. “It was a great effort from everybody, and we’re delighted to get the three points which take us that bit closer to safety.
“It’s still so close though so we’re not going to get carried away, but we’ll obviously take a lot of confidence from what we’ve done recently. We’ve now got a massive game coming up and we’ll concentrate on that.
“At this moment in time, I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but we have to concentrate on ourselves and if we do our own job then we’ll be alright.
“The type of personalities we have in the squad means that we all know we’ve got to go into each game going for a result because that’s the level we’re at in the Premier League which we found out earlier on in the season. We know what it takes to win games and we have to keep showing that same desire in each and every game that we’ve got left.”
Much had been made of Chelsea’s run of seven fixtures in 19 days heading into the game, but Davis says Saints were only looking at themselves in a bid to make it six home wins for the season.
“It wasn’t something that we spoke about too much to be honest,” he explained. “We’ve got quality players throughout the squad and we knew it would be a good test, but we matched them and although maybe we didn’t get the same flow in the second half, we dug in there, kept going and obviously we’re delighted to get the three points.
Davis played 84 minutes of the 2-1 win over Chelsea on the back of an international schedule for Northern Ireland and put in another energetic performance as he begins to find his best form in his time at the club.
“I think so,” he agreed. “I’m starting to find my form coinciding with the arrival of the new manager, so I’m pleased to be able to add to the squad and make a contribution.
“On the back of a bad result (for Northern Ireland) it was great to get back out on the pitch again and do myself justice. We managed to do that today and it’s a great three points for the team.”
