Pochettino 'Sad' For Players

Mauricio Pochettino offered sympathy to his Southampton team after they were pegged back late on at the DW Stadium.

Saints battled from a goal down to lead Wigan Athletic 2-1 thanks to an 85th minute strike from Morgan Schneiderlin, but Shaun Maloney’s late intervention for the Latics, left the visitors frustrated with just a point for their efforts.

“There are two different feelings,” Pochettino explained to Saints Player. “First because we played well, and secondly, because we could and should have won the game, so we are disappointed with the result.

“I am happy with the performance of the team, and although I am disappointed with the result, we played well today, so I am happy with that.”

The Argentine could be forgiven for thinking that Schneiderlin’s strike five minutes from time was going to be enough following a controlling second half performance, though the dramatic equaliser served a lesson in seeing the game out.

“You can never count on winning,” he said. “You always have to wait until the end of the match and that is the same in football all of the time, you can't rest on your laurels, you have to play until the end.

“Today I am sad for the players who have played very well and made a great effort, but unfortunately we haven't come away with the result.

“I am also very pleased with the supporters who have given us great support here today.”

Saints are back in action against Manchester City on home soil next weekend, and Pochettino says he will be looking for another high intensity performance against the reigning champions.

“In every top league every match is as important as the one before it, and the one after it, so there is no difference in that aspect to my time in Spain.”
