Full-Time: Palace 1-0 Saints

It's all over and Saints should have really taken a point from Selhurst Park this afternoon. The three or four chances created just after half-time couldn't be converted and therefore it's a losing start to the 2020/21 season.

Zaha scored after just 13 minutes with one of Palaces few chances in the game and that was the difference between the two sides.

+5’

WHAT A CHANCE!

Walker-Peters gets a cross in and Ings is on the end of it with his head but it is saved again!

+5’

Should be 2-0...

Zaha runs past Stephens, is through on goal but his shot hits the side netting.

Six minutes added on...

The game has petered out in the last few minutes but just one chance is needed...

86’

Free kick in shooting range

James Ward-Prowse stands over the ball but his effort is over. Not long to go here at Selhurst Park.

Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Ché Adams

VAR Decision: Goal not awarded for Crystal Palace [Wilfried Zaha] was cancelled

Zaha gets through on goal with no-one near him and finishes easily. However, when the striker made the initial run, the top half of his body was offside after Jon Moss checks with VAR.

80’

Crystal Palace substitution: Eberechi Eze replaces Jeffrey Schlupp

It's a Premier League debut for the former QPR man.

Southampton substitution: Moussa Djenepo replaces Will Smallbone

Will we see some Moussa Magic!?

15 minutes to go

Saints are still battling, trying to pass the ball at pace, trying to break the Palace defence down but it is just proving difficult since that early flurry of chances at the start of the second-half.

74’

Crystal Palace substitution: Luka Milivojevic replaces James McCarthy

Ward-Prowse shoots!

And it just goes over. Hard angle to shoot from but the Captain took it on.

73’

Free-kick...

Danny Ings is tackled on the corner of the area. Ward-Prowse and Bertrand stand over it but it's an awkward angle.

68’

Adams goes down

Che Adams has the ball in the area and goes down but Jon Moss isn't interested. Ings collects the loose ball but runs out of room as it goes out for a goal kick.

Ralph watches on

The manager will be happier with this second-half performance but no goals to show for it with 30 minutes left.

59’

Yellow Card for James McCarthy (Crystal Palace)

📸 Adams chance

Here is that chance for Che Adams. Saints should be level here and are by far the better team.

BIG CHANCE!

Adams has a chance and fires hard but too closely to Guaita in the Palace goal. The keeper is able to push it away. Saints clearly on top in this second half and will feel they should be level.

Walker-Peters red card rescinded

Kyle Walker-Peters is given a red card for a high foot on fellow full-back Mitchell but it is then overturned by Jon Moss to a yellow card after consulting the monitor.

52’

Yellow Card for Kyle Walker-Peters (Southampton)

AND IT'S BEEN CHANGED! Jon Moss watches the monitor and changes his mind. Walker-Peters is awarded a yellow card instead.

50’

Red Card for Kyle Walker-Peters (Southampton)

Walker-Peters goes in to challenge Mitchell but is late and catches the defender on the foot in mid-air. We go though to VAR.

48’

AND ANOTHER...

Walker-Peters gets in behind the Palace defence and crosses low but Adams can't get onto the end of it. Two chances in as many minutes.

47’

CHANCE!

It's Ings to Adams to Redmond who shoots straight at the Palace keeper. A great start to the half and much more like the Saints we saw at the end of last season.

46’

Southampton substitution: Jannik Vestergaard replaces Jan Bednarek

Ralph Hasenhuttl changes things in defence.

Second-half underway!

Will we see a different Saints approach in the next 45 minutes? Here we go!

Half-Time: Palace 1-0 Saints

It's been a tough first-half for Saints who haven't been able to provide the chances for Danny Ings and Che Adams with Palace holding firm.

Wilfried Zaha gave Palace the lead with a good finish after 13 minutes but otherwise the chances have been few and far between.

+1’

Corner to Saints...

Smallbone gets a cross in but it's headed behind by Scott Dann. The corner is then cleared by Dann again. It's just not falling for Saints in this first-half.

42’

Yellow Card for Jeffrey Schlupp (Crystal Palace)

39’

Stephens with the block...

Wilfried Zaha finds space on the wing and goes to take on the centre-back but the Saints man doesn't let him pass and it rolls out for a goal-kick.

15 minutes to half-time

Ryan Bertrand encourages his team to keep going here at Selhurst Park...

32’

Ings gets a header away...

Danny Ings gets on the end of a cross but easily saved by Guaita in the Palace goal then McCarthy rushes out of his goal to clear a Palace attack...

26’

Dann denied by McCarthy

Palace captain Scott Dann heads goalwards from a corner, but Alex McCarthy gets down to his left to push it away well. It wouldn't have counted anyway, though, as Jordan Ayew is flagged for offside having been just in front of McCarthy, but a good stop from the Saints keeper nonetheless.

23’

"Quicker, quicker"

Ralph Hasenhüttl is firing out instructions from his technical area, as he looks to help direct his team back into the game.

Saints looking to bounce back

Not a lot has happened here since that Zaha opener, but Saints will be keen to respond before half-time if they can.

Zaha fires Palace ahead

Palace win the ball in midfield, Andros Townsend races away down the right and clips a cross to Wilfried Zaha, who side-foots home at the back post. Tough on Saints, who had been in control up to that point.

12’

GOAL

Wilfried Zaha (12’) | 1 0

11’

Stephens able to continue

The centre-back returns to the pitch and is into the action again.

Stephens down injured

There's a stoppage in play as Jack Stephens goes down with an injury. The defender was holding his right leg after clashing knees with Wilfried Zaha, with medical staff now giving him some treatment.

Debut outing for our third kit

It's a first look at our brand new third kit in action today!

5’

Stephens goes close early on!

We're under way here, and Southampton have the first chance, as Jack Stephens meets James Ward-Prowse's corner with a header, but, while it's well-placed, he can't generate enough power to beat Vicente Guaita in the Palace goal.

Warm-ups underway! 🏃‍♂️

The players are currently warming up at Selhurst Park with only 20 minutes to kick off! How we feeling Saints fans!?
