Saints Academy Graduate
Micahel Obafemi enjoyed a star-studded youth career; featuring for the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Watford as he rose his way up the academy pyramid.
He moved to the south coast from Leyton Orient in July 2016, going on to feature for Saints in the U18s Premier League and FA Youth Cup during the 2016/17 season, scoring 3 goals in 17 appearances.
Obafemi’s involvement in the Saints academy increased during the following season, playing for both the U18s and U23s, alongside featuring for the first team in both the EFL Trophy and the Premier League.
Premier League Debut
The Irishman made his professional debut as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Spurs in January 2018, aged just 17 years and 199 days.
Behind Luke Shaw, Obafemi became the second youngest player to feature in the Premier League for Southampton.
His first professional goal came just over 11 months later; Obafemi scored the third goal in Saints’ 3-1 win at Huddersfield in December 2018.
The goal meant he became the club’s youngest scorer in the Premier League to date, at 18 years and 169 days old.
Irish International
His performances for Saints meant that Obafemi soon gained some recognition at an International level, as he was called-up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad in November 2018. The striker made his debut as a second half substitute in the 0-0 draw with Denmark. He also therefore became the first player born in the 2000s to win a senior cap.
Obafemi has continued to feature at International level, making his debut for the Republic of Ireland U21s in October 2019 in a 0-0 draw with Italy.
Establishing as a Saint
In 2019/20, Obafemi scored four goals in 25 appearances, 14 as a substitute, and most memorably scored the opener in the 2-0 Boxing Day victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
He began the season though with the winning goal against Fulham in the Carabao Cup. He also netted at the London Stadium in a defeat to West Ham and scored a late equaliser as Saints drew 2-2 with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
